The Cost of American Health Care

Through recent years, the American healthcare system has changed the way we enroll in plans and receive the health care we need. Whether we're looking for coverage for doctor visits or prescription drugs, having health insurance can help keep medical expenses low or even covered.

The Ins and Outs of the American Healthcare System

With the passing of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (also referred to as Obamacare or the ACA), new laws were passed that made health insurance more accessible and affordable to more Americans. Below are some of the major changes that have helped change the state of healthcare reform in our country:

Ten Essential Health Benefits

No matter what level of coverage you purchase, you are guaranteed coverage for ten essential health benefits when you receive care from a healthcare provider within your plan's network. These benefits include:

  1. Prescription drugs
  2. Pediatric services
  3. Preventive and wellness services, and chronic disease management
  4. Emergency services
  5. Hospitalization
  6. Mental health and addiction services
  7. Pregnancy, maternity, and newborn care
  8. Ambulatory patient services
  9. Laboratory services
  10. Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices

Individual Mandate

As in previous years since the ACA was passed, there will continue to be a tax penalty from the Individual Mandate. This penalty applies to those who have not enrolled in health insurance and aren't eligible for exemption. The 2016 tax penalty is estimated to be: $695 per uninsured family (up to three people), or 2.5% of a family's taxable income.

Subsidy for Low-Income Homes

To help families afford the monthly premiums and out-of-pocket expenses that come with purchasing health insurance, low-income families making between 100% and 400% of the Federal Poverty Line may be eligible for the subsidy program. This includes two types of subsidies:

Premium Tax Credit is a subsidy that "lowers the monthly insurance plan payment for any of the government's four plan levels: bronze, silver, gold and platinum. Each level has an increasingly higher premium and lower out-of-pocket costs." It does so by having the government cover the cost directly to your health insurance provider, or by allowing you to expense the cost through your annual tax return.

Cost-Sharing Reduction is "a discount that lowers the amount of money paid for out-of-pocket expenses, which is your share of the cost for things like doctor visits, lab tests, drugs and other covered services." This means that your health insurance provider can help cover the cost of your deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance when you receive health care.
