The majority of Americans who signed up for health care or “Obamacare” through the federal health exchange last year will automatically be re-enrolled in the plan they are currently enrolled in. Approximately 95% of Americans, or 5.1 million people, have selected re-enrollment in their chosen plans for 2015. This includes the renewal of the subsidies they received for 2014; if you qualified for tax credits last year, then you will automatically receive tax credits if you opted to have your Obamacare enrollment renewed.
There are many benefits of auto enrollment in the federal health marketplace, including:
- Convenience for the health insurance consumer. Those who opted to have their health insurance plan automatically renewed in 2015 won’t have to do anything and will continue to receive health coverage from their chosen plan.
- Providing the government with a head start on their Obamacare enrollment goals for 2015.
- Keeping traffic on HealthCare.gov down, providing a smoother and easier experience to those attempting to navigate the health insurance marketplace.
If you don’t wish to be automatically re-enrolled into your current health insurance plan, then you can sign up for a different plan during the open enrollment period. The open enrollment period begins November 1, 2015, and lasts through January 31, 2016. If you don’t enroll in a different plan during the open enrollment period, then you will automatically be re-enrolled in your current plan. You will receive a notice in the mail instructing you how to update your information.
