What to Look for When Enrolling in a Health Plan
Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), there are new regulations that help Americans have better access to affordable health care. Before you enroll in a plan, here are some things to consider when buying health insurance:
Know What Types of Plans Are Available
In general, there are four types of plans you can enroll in that determine which providers with which you can receive health care, and how much coverage you'll receive when you do. They include:
- Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)
- Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)
- Point-of-Service Plan (POS)
- High-Deductible Health Plan (HDHP)
Know What Level of Coverage You Need
When you look for a health plan, you'll come across four different levels of coverage, or "metal levels," that you can choose from. The amount of coverage you receive from your health plan determines how much coverage your health insurance provider will offer when you receive care. The four levels include:
- Bronze: 60% covered by your health insurance provider, 40% covered by you.
- Silver: 70% covered by your health insurance provider, 30% covered by you.
- Gold: 80% covered by your health insurance provider, 20% covered by you.
- Platinum: 90% covered by your health insurance provider, 10% covered by you.
Know When the Enrollment Period Opens
During the year, there are two enrollment periods to take note of.
Open Enrollment Period lasts for a set period of time each year. This is the period of time where all Americans can enroll, re-enroll, or switch health insurance plans at the marketplace of their choice. When you enroll in a plan during this time, you can have a plan that offers covered essential benefits and preventive services.
Special Enrollment Period occurs at any point during the year, even outside the Open Enrollment Period. When you or your family experience a qualifying life event, you are given 60 days to enroll in a new health plan. Qualifying life events include:
- Marriage or divorce
- Having or adopting a child
- Job change
