Facts about the Obamacare Enrollment Period
The Affordable Care Act's (Obamacare) enrollment period begins November 1 and ends December 15. This is the period during which customers may enroll in health insurance plans as required by the law. The deadline for enrollment may vary by state. Enrolling in an insurance plan provides security for you and your family’s well-being.
The Open Enrollment Period is the only time of year when you can sign up for a qualified medical plan without needing an exemption for a Special Enrollment Period. A Special Enrollment Period welcomes customers who have experienced a qualifying event, such as job loss, marriage, or birth of a child, and need to enroll in or modify their health coverage outside of the standard enrollment period. .
What to Expect When You're Enrolling
Between November 1 and December 15, you will be able to shop and compare marketplace plans either online or through an insurance representative. In addition to enrolling in a plan for the first time, those with health insurance coverage also have the option to renew or modify the current plan or change plans entirely.
The Obamacare enrollment period is also an opportunity for families to apply for cost assistance, or Obamacare subsidies. These subsidies can help limit the amount you pay for health insurance. The requirements for these subsidies are as follows:
- You must live in the U.S.
- You must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawfully present in the U.S.
- You must not currently be incarcerated.
- Your total household income must be between 100-400 percent below the Federal Poverty Line.
