Choosing Your KS Health Care Plan
One of the concerns many families face when choosing which health plan to purchase is how to afford it. Thankfully with the Affordable Care Act of 2010, you have the option to choose how much you can pay for your health care and how much coverage you receive from your health insurance provider.
In general, you can choose from four types of health plans, or "metal levels" to find the right plan and coverage. Depending on how much you're able to pay in monthly premiums, you can choose how much coverage your health insurance provider can give when you receive health services, and how much you'll be left to cover out of pocket.
You can choose from these coverage levels:
- Bronze: 60% covered by your insurance provider, 40% covered by you.
- Silver: 70% covered by your insurance provider, 30% covered by you.
- Gold: 80% covered by your insurance provider, 20% covered by you.
- Platinum: 90% covered by your insurance provider, 10% covered by you.
A good way to tell which of these plans would suit you is to understand your own medical needs.
If you and your family are generally healthy and don't need to visit the doctor's office for more than annual checkups and the occasional prescription, you may benefit from a Bronze or Silver plan. Since your essential health benefits are covered regardless of which metal level level you purchase, you can benefit from paying low monthly premiums.
On the other hand, if your family needs to visit specialists or receive prescription drugs regularly, you may benefit from a Gold or Platinum plan. Though you may pay more in premiums each month, your out-of-pocket costs (e.g. deductibles, copay, coinsurance) will remain low or even be covered entirely when you receive health services.
