To make things easier for Americans, the federal health exchange will be automatically re-enrolling people who signed up for a plan with the health insurance marketplace under new ACA or “Obamacare” regulations.

Learn more About Obamacare Auto-Enrollment

About 95% of the people who enrolled in an Obamacare plan through the federal health exchange selected to have their health plan automatically renew. A majority of these people will also receive the subsidies again to help pay for their health care coverage in the coming year. This means that approximately 5.1 million Americans who signed up for their health plan through or their state exchange will receive the tax credits, in addition to having continued enrollment in their health insurance plan. Those who are auto-enrolled in their plan for 2016 won’t have to do anything, saving them the time and headache of having to go through the lengthy enrollment process again.

I Received Two Letters in the Mail about my Insurance, What do I do?

If you haven’t already, you should be getting two letters in the mail in late September/Early November. Pay close attention to the information contained in these letters. Health insurance consumers will receive a notice in the mail from the government instructing them how to update their information through the marketplace to help them receive an updated tax credit that fits any changes from the prior year. Consumers will also receive information from their insurance company about their current health plan. This letter will include information such as insurance premiums, which are expected to rise this year.

If you do nothing after receiving your letters, you will be re-enrolled in your existing plan. Or, you can pick another plan during open enrollment if you want to. Open enrollment begins November 1, 2015 and runs through January 31, 2016.  Those who opted out of automatic re-enrollment will also have to go through the process of navigating the health insurance marketplace again.
