Health Insurance, The Law, and You.
In 2010, Congress passed legislation called the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. You probably know it as Obamacare. The law is designed to help uninsured and underinsured Americans obtain affordable health insurance. When it passed, the health insurance industry became more government-regulated than ever before.
One of those new regulations involves you: under Obamacare, most American citizens are required to obtain health insurance. If they do not, they may face a fine on their federal taxes. In exchange for this requirement, the government mandated that the insurance industry make affordable health insurance available to most Americans. You can obtain this insurance in one of several ways: through the Health Insurance Marketplace, the government’s federally-run insurance exchange; through a state insurance exchange, if your state sponsors one of these programs; and via private exchanges like—you guessed it—HealthMarkets.
