Find Health Coverage During the Enrollment Periods

During the year, you have two enrollment periods where you can sign up or re-enroll in a healthcare plan: Open Enrollment and Special Enrollment.

Open Enrollment Period

During the open enrollment period, you have time typically extending over a two-month period, where you are able to sign up or re-enroll in a health insurance plan. This usually takes place in a public or private marketplace, like HealthMarkets. For the 2016 Open Enrollment period, the dates are:

  1. November 1, 2015: Open Enrollment begins.
  2. January 1, 2016: Your health plan period will begin coverage.
  3. January 31, 2016: Open enrollment ends.

It's important to make sure that you enroll in a health plan during this time, whether it's a new one or an existing one. If don't enroll in health insurance, and you don't qualify for a hardship exemption, you may have to face the tax penalty, or Individual Mandate.

This mandate states that all who are without health insurance must pay the tax penalty. For the 2016 coverage year, the tax penalty will be $695 per person (up to three people), or 2.5% of your annual taxable income.

Special Enrollment Period

This enrollment period occurs at any point during the year outside the Open Enrollment period. The Special Enrollment period allows those who faced a qualifying life event a grace period of 60 days after said event to enroll in a new health plan. Qualifying life events can include:

  1. Change in citizenship
  2. Job loss or change
  3. Marriage or divorce
  4. Adopting or having a baby
  5. Relocation

Unsure of whether you qualify for the Special Enrollment period? A licensed agent at HealthMarkets can help.
