U.S. Citizens Have Options When It Comes to Medical Insurance
Here in the USA, there are four common types of health insurance plans, and understanding the different types will help you make the best decision for your needs. Here are the most common types of insurance policies:
- PPO- Preferred Provider Organization, PPO, are most common--particularly for group plans. Under a PPO plan, the individuals covered will have their claims paid at the highest level if they receive care from physicians and hospitals that are considered preferred providers.
- HMO- Health Maintenance Organization, HMO, plans offer their services through a network of providers who exclusively work with that HMO.
- HSA-Qualified- These plans are generally a different type of PPO plan that has the added option of a health savings account. HSA is a type of savings account that allows participants to save funds that will help pay future medical expenses.
- Point-of-Service Plan-With a POS health plan, you have more choices than with an HMO. You also may not need to choose a PCP to coordinate your care. You have the choice to use doctors, hospitals, and other providers that are not in your health plan's network. However, you will have to pay more for using out-of-network providers. You may also have to fill out more paperwork and send in claims for payment.
