Baby Health Insurance Quotes: What Expecting Mothers Need to Know

Doctor examining baby

If you’re looking at baby health insurance quotes, there’s a good chance you are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant. You may have even given birth already. Whatever the case, there is much to learn and a limited amount of time to do so. Good health insurance coverage will be crucial to you and your little one. You will rely on it for everything from prenatal care to pediatric visits. Having the right information beforehand will help ensure you make the right decisions when it comes to your baby’s insurance needs.

Do Your Homework

The first thing you’ll want to do is some homework. If you already have coverage, you’ll want to calculate what premiums, deductibles, and copays will look like after adding your sweet baby. This is assuming you have comprehensive coverage that allows you to do so.

If you do not have existing coverage, or are not satisfied with the coverage you have, you may want to shop for baby health insurance quotes. Since giving birth is considered a qualifying life event, you have the opportunity to switch health insurance plans outside of the usual enrollment period.

During the research phase, you will want to ask questions like: “will this plan cover my newborn’s nursery stay?” “Will it cover neonatal intensive care?” “What are the plan’s rules regarding in-network and out-of-network pediatricians?” You will want to weigh these factors against each plan’s cost structure in order to determine your baby’s health insurance cost.

Be Aware of Time Constraints

If you already have comprehensive insurance, your child is covered from the moment he or she is born. But you have only a 30-day time window in which to enroll your child in coverage. Once you do so, he or she will retroactively be covered from the moment of birth.

If you have a baby and are uninsured, you don’t have much longer. Within 60 days you must buy health coverage for you and your baby. Under the rules of the Affordable Care Act, failing to do so could result in you being charged a fine. If you miss the 60-day time window, you will likely have to wait until the next open enrollment period in order to purchase coverage. In this case, you may be able to purchase temporary insurance products to provide some financial protection during this wait.

Weigh Your Decision

Reviewing baby health insurance quotes and comparing options can be overwhelming. But keeping just a few points in mind may make the decision easier. For example, if you anticipate making lots of trips to the doctor consider opting for a plan with lower copayments. If you’re expecting a baby late in the year, you may want to base your decision on the deductible. If care related to your infant stretches across one year and into the next, you could end up paying the deductible twice.

Whatever the decision, it’s important to make it fast. You and your infant will need care and don’t want to miss enrollment dates or face penalties for being uninsured.
