A letter from your health insurance company rejecting a claim can be a nasty surprise. But different plans have different kinds of coverage. If you’ve changed insurance plans recently, or are considering a change, keep an eye out for how your insurance handles the following procedures and health issues. Forewarned is forearmed!
1. LASIK or Laser Eye Surgery
Most health insurance policies don’t cover the cost of laser eye surgery unless you need it for refractive errors that are due to an injury or surgery. If you have major eye problems, your health insurance may cover it, but there’s no standard for how severe the impairment must be, so you should check with your provider.
While contraceptive methods and sterilization procedures must be covered for women, the law is less clear when it comes to men. Most insurance plans do cover vasectomies, but you’ll want to be sure this is the best option for you, as only about 30% of insurance plans cover vasectomy reversals.
3. Weight Loss Surgery
Some insurance policies cover bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, but you may have to meet some strict requirements in order to qualify. If you are considering weight loss surgery, carefully examine your insurer’s policy to see what is required. A few plans even include weight loss programs as part of their benefits.
4. Hearing Aids
Many health insurance plans do not cover hearing aids. Even Medicare, which covers adults over age 65 (who are more likely to need the use of a hearing aid) requires you to pay 100% of the cost for routine hearing exams and hearing aids.
5. Chiropractic, Massage Therapy, and Acupuncture
Health insurance companies are all over the board when it comes to alternative medicine. Although studies have found that acupuncture is a good treatment for arthritis and other ailments, 92% of plans exclude benefits. Most insurance plans do cover chiropractic care, however. Policies differ on massage therapy.
6. Dental Care
Dental services may be included in your health insurance policy; however, some plans only cover non-cosmetic dental costs, like if a tooth is knocked out during a rigorous game of hockey. Check your plan for specific details on your coverage, as dental health is essential to overall wellbeing.
