Did you know that about 27% of Medicare beneficiaries have diabetes? If you have diabetes, you know how difficult it can be to manage. Luckily, if you know what to do, the symptoms and side effects of diabetes can be reduced and you can live a mostly normal life.
As a part of its preventive and screening services, Medicare Part B (medical insurance) covers diabetes self-management training in an effort to help people manage their illness and prevent complications.
What Is Diabetes Self-Management Training?
The program is usually done in groups of 2-20 people and consists of up to 10 hours of initial training. Based on your screening test, you may also qualify for up to 2 hours of follow-up training each year.
According to Medicare.gov, the diabetes training “includes tips for eating healthy, being active, monitoring blood sugar, taking medication, and reducing risks.”
Who Is Eligible for Diabetes Self-Management Training?
In order to qualify, you must have a written order from a doctor or other health care provider. If you met one of these conditions during the last 12 months, you may qualify:
- You were diagnosed with diabetes
- You began taking diabetes medication, or switched from oral medication to insulin
- You have diabetes and have recently become eligible for Medicare
- You’re at risk for complications from diabetes
If you qualify, the cost of diabetes self-management training is 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after the yearly Medicare Part B deductible is met.
