Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield is a trade name. It represents Rocky Mountain Hospital and Medical Service, Inc. in Colorado and Nevada, Anthem Health Plans, Inc. in Connecticut, Community Insurance Company in Ohio, and more, including health plans in California, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Virginia, and Wisconsin. (There may also be some specialty plan members in other states.)
Anthem sells individual and family health plans as well as dental and vision insurance. Headquartered in Indianapolis, Anthem is a publically traded, managed healthcare company. It is the largest member of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, and one of the biggest health benefits companies in the country. It was founded in 1944. Prior to 2014 it was known as WellPoint, Inc. Today it serves close to 38.5 million members, and employs over 50,000 people.
