Private health insurance

The insurance world is always changing. But don’t worry. While considering if you should keep your current private health insurance plan or shopping for a new one, HealthMarkets can help you evaluate your options.

Public vs. private: What’s the difference?

Public health insurance is provided or subsidized in some way by the federal government. Medicare, veteran benefits, and insurance provided to federal employees are all examples of public health insurance. Private health insurance, on the other hand, is provided by private companies.

HealthMarkets can help you find options that meet your needs, whether it is for a private plan, a health plan on the government exchange, or even a Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement plan. We offer a broad portfolio of health plans from recognized insurance companies nationwide. From platinum level metal plans to catastrophic only, we’re ready to help you find a plan that can fit your budget and your lifestyle.

The public marketplace, private health insurance, and the Affordable Care Act

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is intended to ensure that Americans have access to healthcare they can afford. To that end, it has created a public marketplace where people can buy health insurance. Depending on life circumstances and income, this public marketplace provides insurance plans with tax credits that lower premiums to make the plans more accessible to many Americans. If you’re interested in learning more information about the public marketplace, we can help you evaluate your options.

You can also purchase private health insurance from companies not on the public marketplace. You may want to do so if your income is too high to qualify for the premium subsidies associated with marketplace plans, or if you can’t find a health plan within the marketplace that satisfies your needs. We can help you with this, too.

Can you buy private health insurance at any time?

No, you cannot buy private health insurance at any time. Plans are available for enrollment during the annual Open Enrollment Period, which runs from November 1 to December 15. If you qualify, you may also purchase a plan during a Special Enrollment Period.

How do I choose a private health insurance plan?

To choose a private health insurance plan that meets your needs, we recommend you contact a licensed insurance agent. An agent can help you find plans available in your area, compare benefits and costs, and find a plan that meets your needs and your budget. Get started today by calling an agent at (888) 471-1249.
