Can Medicare Part B include dental coverage? Yes and no. While Part B is a necessity in your health insurance coverage, it may still leave you unprotected for services you still need.

Those who qualify for Medicare can expect many of their health needs to be covered by Medicare — but not all of them. Some medical services aren't covered under Part B  in the way we expect, including dental. But there may be a way to get the dental coverage we need under the right circumstances.

Original Medicare has two Parts — A and B. While Part A covers your hospitals, Part B covers many outpatient medical expenses, including doctor's visits, preventive services, and mental health services.

Does Medicare Part B Cover Any Dental Expenses?

Medicare Part B does not cover routine dental services, such as cleanings. These services will need to be covered through independent dental plans or may be covered by some Medicare Advantage plans.

Medicare Part B Dental Coverage Includes Some Oral Care

Medicare Part B dental coverage works in ways we don't expect. While there's no coverage for care, treatment, removal, or replacement of teeth, Part B does cover dental services in situations such as:

  • If you’ve had an oral exam in the hospital in anticipation of a kidney transplant.
  • If you have a jaw-related disease and need dental services necessary for radiation treatment.
  • If you’ve had a facial tumor removed and need ridge reconstruction as a part of the procedure.
  • If you need surgery to treat jaw or face fractures.
  • If you’ve had jaw surgery and need dental splints and wiring.

Because these cases are not common for most Medicare users, it would be more beneficial for you to invest in a stand-alone dental plan to help subsidize the cost of receiving regular dental services essential to your well-being.

Dental Coverage With Stand-Alone Plans

Although Original Medicare does not provide comprehensive coverage, that does not mean seniors will be left without dental care. There are senior dental plans that can be purchased as stand-alone plans, meaning they are not connected to your other forms of medical insurance. These stand-alone senior dental plans can cost around $20 - $40 per month and can cover preventive, diagnostic, and restorative services and procedures.
