The Oscar health insurance company formed in 2012. It was created in the wake of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Oscar was designed with a certain group in mind—those who do not qualify for Medicaid, Medicare, or employer benefits. The company’s intention is to provide benefits that are easy to understand and quality care that conserves both time and money.
Oscar sells health plans from all 4 metal tiers (platinum, gold, silver, and bronze) in the states of New York, New Jersey, California, and Texas. Individual, family, and child-only plans are available. These plans include benefits such as free visits to the doctor, free generic medicine, and more than 75 free practical care services, such as flu and immunization shots and pregnancy screenings. Oscar plans also feature other cost-saving benefits, such as discounted pricing on brand name medications and urgent care visits, as well as cash rewards for meeting fitness goals.
The Oscar network includes tens of thousands of providers. In New Jersey, there are more than 20,000 in-network physicians and 66 hospitals. New York has more than 30,000 in-network doctors, 80 hospitals, and 60,000 pharmacies. Oscar serves more than 145,000 customers nationwide. Oscar has a flu shot program that donates $3.30 to children in need for every shot administered to a member during flu season.
Like many insurance companies, Oscar’s product offerings include EPO plans.
