Providence Health Plan belongs to the third largest non-profit health system in the country, Providence Health and Services, which serves communities in Oregon.

Providence Health Plan serves more than 375,000 people, including individuals, families, commercial clients, and recipients of Medicaid and Medicare. Providence sells Medicare Advantage Plans, some of which include Part D prescription drug benefits. Seniors also have a choice of 2 supplemental dental plans and 1 supplemental vision plan. Group health insurance is available for small and large employers that includes HSA and dental options. Additionally, the company offers employers supplemental services, such as employee assistance programs, chiropractic care, and workers’ compensation.

Providence Health and Services got its start back in the 1840s. It was founded by a group of Catholic women in Canada who later moved to the American West in 1852. By 1902, this group of women had set up a total of 29 community institutions that included hospitals and schools.

Providence Health Plan emerged in 1997 as a result of merging health plans in Oregon and Washington. The plan continued to grow, reaching a membership of 326,000 by 2000.
