Medicare coverage is broken into specific parts: Medicare Parts A, B, C, and D. Each part provides its own unique coverage, and depending on which part you choose, the enrollment options will also vary.

On the surface, Medicare parts might look confusing with their generic alphabet names, but don’t worry. Give us less than five minutes, and by the time you finish reading, you’ll be an expert.

Just keep in mind that Medicare is similar to the health insurance coverage you’ve probably had with an employer or individually. It can cover doctor visits, inpatient and outpatient hospital care, prescription drugs, lab tests, etc., and even dental and vision if you like. It’s just broken out a little different than you’re used to.

Here’s a brief overview of each of the parts of Medicare.

About Medicare Part A, B, C, and D and How to Enroll

The different parts of Medicare each provide different types of health insurance. You’re eligible to enroll in Medicare beginning three months before your 65th birthday to three months after. This is called your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP).

You may also be eligible at a younger age if you have a disability or end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

When you apply for Social Security benefits, you’re automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A. You can choose to enroll in Part B to receive additional coverage for a premium. Parts A and B are also called Original Medicare.

The other two parts are managed by private insurance companies, and enrollment is optional. Medicare Part C is also known as Medicare Advantage. It’s an all-in-one plan that provides the services covered by Medicare Parts A and B. It includes additional coverage, depending on the plan you choose. Medicare Part D is for prescription drug coverage.

Which Part is Right for You: Medicare Part A, B, C, or D?

Which Medicare part(s) you choose depends on what medical services you want covered. Here’s a general breakdown of what’s covered under Parts A, B, C, and D:

  • How much can I afford in out-of-pocket expenses?
  • Do I want to keep my current providers?
